Generation of Temporally and Spatially Heterogeneous Landscapes for Models of Population Dynamics

چکیده

There is an increased interest in the use of spatial explicit modelling techniques in ecological research. One of the strength of this technique is the possibility to explicitly study the effect of environmental heterogeneity on the dynamics of populations or whole communities. Most of these studies focused on aspects of spatial heterogeneity, and studies focusing on environmental change employed other modelling techniques. Only recently were these two aspects of heterogeneity coupled within the same framework. The paper aims to review algorithms for generating spatially and temporarily heterogeneous landscapes that can be used in studies of population dynamics. These models have the potential to give new insight into the dynamics of populations living in a fragmented and changing environment.

Solute Transport for Pulse Type Input Point Source along Temporally and Spatially Dependent Flow

In the present study, analytical solutions are obtained for two-dimensional advection dispersion equation for conservative solute transport in a semi-infinite heterogeneous porous medium with pulse type input point source of uniform nature. The change in dispersion parameter due to heterogeneity is considered as linear multiple of spatially dependent function and seepage velocity whereas seepag...

Intermediate disturbance in experimental landscapes improves persistence of beetle metapopulations.

Human-dominated landscapes often feature patches that fluctuate in suitability through space and time, but there is little experimental evidence relating the consequences of dynamic patches for species persistence. We used a spatially and temporally dynamic metapopulation model to assess and compare metapopulation capacity and persistence for red flour beetles (Tribolium castaneum) in experimen...

Aphid Population Dynamics in Agricultural Landscapes: An Agent-based Simulation Model

Presently, there are many population models in existence, but these are often case specific, function at a single spatial scale and fail to tackle the complexity arising from individual actions and interactions that exist in the real-world. A spatially explicit agent-based simulation model has been developed to represent aphid population dynamics in agricultural landscapes. Over time, the aphid...

Extinction threshold in metapopulation models

The term extinction threshold refers to a critical value of some attribute, such as the amount of habitat in the landscape, below which a population, a metapopulation, or a species does not persist. In this paper we discuss the existence and behavior of extinction thresholds in the context of metapopulation models. We review and extend recent developments in the theory and application of patch ...
